Yangquin (2024) is an interactive audio-visual piece of music composed in collaboration with Dr. Oliver Carmen (The University of Liverpool) and Dr. Mark Pilkington (Thought Universe EMS).
Sonically, the piece explores the characteristics of the Chinese instrument the Yangquin. 揚 琴. A hammered dulcimer of various types, very popular not only in China, but also Eastern Europe, the Middle East, India, Iran, and Pakistan. The instruments are also sometimes known by the names “santoor” and “cimbalom“. This instrument had an influence on the Thai classical instrument, known as Khim (ขิม) (wikipedia – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangqin).
Since 2018, Oliver and Mark have produced a body of audio-visual music that combines spatial and gestural activities within the realms of electroacoustic music. Each of the artists applies their own multi-disciplinary sonic and visual practices to permeate change through a series of seemingly unrelated mediums.
Concerts: Premiered on the 26th October 2024 at MANTIS 20th anniversary festival at the University of Manchester.
