Student Projects:
Tabula (2020) by Tijani Elhassan.
In May 2020, I provided online teaching in max/MSP for Tijani's live interactive project for his BA in Music production and Sound Engineering at dBs Music in Bristol, UK.
The concept of Tabula deals with the inequalities that black lives face everyday within a political regime that denies freedom and justice. The audio material consists of speeches made prominent civil rights activist by Dr. Martin Luther King and the former President of USA Barack Obama. Additional material came from classical music recordings. A number of sound transformation techniques were programmed to transform the sounds in real time using the interactive software max/MSP. The piece demonstrates how the user can abstract media in order to alter the meaning of the messages. The motivation of piece highlights the need to speak out against racial inequalities. A message that resonates across generations and strikes at the very heart of society. The message of repression and inequality is even more prevalent today in 2020. We must continue to fight for justice for all cultures in the world.
