Tabula (2020) by Tijani Elhassan.
In May 2020 I provided online teaching for Tijani's live interactive project in max/MSP/Jitter towards a BA in Music production and Sound Engineering at dBs Music in Bristol, UK.
The concept of Tabula deals with the inequalities that black lives face everyday within a political regime that denies freedom and justice. The audio consists of recorded speeches made by Dr. Martin Luther King and Barack Obama. Classical music recordings and sound transformation techniques are used to offset and blur the original meaning of the messages. The piece demonstrates how the user can abstract media in order to alter the meaning of the messages. The motivation of piece is to highlight the need to speak out against inequality. A message that resonates across generations and strikes at the very heart of society with a poignancy to remind us all to address inequalities. The message of repression and inequality is even more prevalent today, we must continue to fight for justice for all in the world.
